Southwest Florida Regional Airport originally opened on May 14, 1983 with one 8,400-foot runway. It wasn't until the following year that it started offering international flights, and in 1993, they not only changed the name to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), but they also lengthened the runway by a few thousand feet to make it 12,000-feet. Today, RSW is one of the top 50 airports for passenger traffic and they host more than 15 different airlines. In 2005, they opened a brand new, state-of-the-art terminal.

For more than a decade, a 62,000 sq. ft. parcel in the River District in downtown Fort Myers has been ready for development, only to remain as-is despite plans for it that popped up back in 2006. That's all about to change according to Fort Myers real estate developer, Phil Fischler, who founded Fischler Property Co. in 2009.

The Villages of Estero is going to be welcoming a retail super giant into the area – a Mediterranean-styled Walmart Supercenter.

As of July 20, 2015, The Villages of Estero is going to be welcoming a retail super giant into the area – a Mediterranean-styled Walmart Supercenter. They're set to open the 185,896-square-foot store on a 33-acre site on the corner of US 41 and Estero Parkway. It was believed that they were going to open in spring, but are now going to be opening in the summer instead. It's going to be the 10th Walmart in Lee County, first in south Lee County, and the 15th Walmart in Southwest Florida. In Florida, there are a total of 334 retail units with 217 Supercenters.

The Walmart Supercenter in Estero will hire 300 employees.
